It is with considerable sadness that we advise a close friend and huge contributor to Urunga Football, Phil Fogarty, passed away last Wednesday after complications from surgery.

Apart from his massive contribution to our club, he was a keen cyclist and the cycling fraternity are also recognising him this week as “Festival of Phil”, with a number of planned rides to show support to his son, Jim, & his brother (Peter) who are in town. Phil only just retired from his work a few weeks ago.

Phil has been a long standing executive committee member & player at UFC. It was his enthusiasm and drive that amalgamated the club into one entity in 2007, as back then, there was a separate “Seniors” and “Juniors”. He drafted the original amalgamation document which became the club’s current constitution and played a critical role in the club’s growth generating all sorts of grants and remaining a key executive committee member for years. Phil has been a legendary supporter for the club. His zest for life and dedication to soccer was exemplary. Phil did everything he could to grow and support UFC, including dedicating himself to resolving long drawn out issues over the grounds through the “Recreation Grounds” committee.

There will be a celebration of life on Wednesday 24th April at Nambucca Valley Golf club starting at 2:00pm. Phil loved his football, whether it was watching a game, playing, or simply helping out around the club. Urunga Raiders are a special connection for his son, Jim, and Phil took great pride in watching and being part of the club’s many successes. During the celebration, there is an opportunity to share little stories or memories (about 3 mins). If you would like to be involved, please contact Cathy Jarrett.

There will also be opportunities for people to share stories informally throughout the celebration.

Our thoughts and sincere condolences are to Bev and the family. UFC is humbled and blessed to have been a part of Phil’s life.

Here is a photo of us at the signing of the soccer amalgamation document in Dec 2007 at the Urunga Golf Club.

The Raiders back at home on the svelte (but thirsty) surfaces of the Cabbage Patch, sunshine pouring down to boot and look you just wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Today’s prey a rejuvenated Grafton United sitting in 5th place after 6 rounds, yes you read that correctly- 6th spot. A 3-2 result over the Northern Storm and 1-0 over Coffs Coast Tigers. Stone motherless last in 2017, conceded an eye-watering 170 goals in that season (9.4/game for you mathematicians out there) scoring 6, I just have no idea what that could do to your football state of mind, but here they are winning matches a true testament to resolve and perhaps therapy.

All in the past though, the United machine exuded a vitality, enthusiasm and will to win on display as the visitors defended in an organized and drilled fashion led by a calm Richard Akoto in the heart of the purple defense. United had to be as well, the Raiders looked as committed as I’ve seen them. Kale Hopper painting a football picture for the small but parochial crowd, his incisive passes a constant threat to the United defense. So no surprise after Hopper stroked pass for Pablo Kastner to whack in on 19 minutes. Kastener’s one touch control set up the opportunity and really denied any chance of a save from Grafton’s keeper Wylie Tynan. The rest of the half, a series of Raiders attacks with perhaps ‘the ginger bread’ Jai Waddick man somewhat unlucky after he bounced one off the underside of the crossbar mmm not easy to do and fire a couple of other chances wide. The Raiders 1 up at the break.

Jake Leslie, for the Raiders, came on 10 minutes into the start of the second stanza producing an immediate effect. A United defense that was creaking looked about to come unstuck, Leslie slipping a variety of cleaver balls to Raider runners to capitalize on. Tim Rupprecht on the end a of few, but to their credit Grafton were able to deflect all chances, right up until Cale Simmonds thumped one in with 10 to go. It was on the back of a fast break the United defence somewhat disorganized, Rupprecht good enough to slide a pass to Simmonds who did the rest.

The final score 2-0 to the Raiders and probably a good reflection of the match, Grafton certainly a different beast to last season. In the earlier match the Raiders ressies smashed United with 11 unanswered goals, notably President Homes on the score sheet after an accidental deflection went in and he claimed it! The Raiders women’s first grade 7-1 winners over Woopi Reserve grade while the Raiders women’s ressies 6-0 down to Woopi 1st grade (I mean what’s going on in the women’s division?) Anyhow think about this, the Raiders V Maclean Bobcats this weekend at the Patch 12 and 2 whooo a litmus test for sure.

Hope to see you on the hill.
Go U Raiders!

The weather gods smiled on the Cabbage Patch last weekend for round 10 of the North Coast Hotel Group Premier League football competition, streaming sunshine and soft zephyrs of a breeze that favoured neither side, yes if you were somewhere else you were in the wrong place.
Matthew Bennet the man in charge for this match and the Coffs Coast Tigers put under some pressure by the home side in the early exchanges. The combination of Craig Simpson, Lockie Indian Manning and Ben Dooley punching holes in a scrambling Tigers defence, only the woodwork keeping the scores even. The first from Tim Ruprecth bouncing his shot off the near post and minutes later Fabrice Wamara thumping his shot off the other post, in between those efforts Tigers keeper Jake Tarrant had making several acrobatic saves, the Tigers defending grimly now but still after winning possession turned it over too quickly. Still hitting the woodwork doesn’t win matches and it would take 38 minutes to breakdown the stiffening Tigers defence.
A long throw from Jaxen Heward not dealt with the by Tigers Luke Kliendienst and the ball sat up nicely for Fabrice Wamara to thump home. Nothing Tarrant could do on this occasion except retrieve the ball. So 1-0 at the break, and the Tigers really needing to go to plan B to get anything out of this match. Perhaps the Tigers best opportunity of the match arrived 14 minutes into the second half after Mark Ifrah let go a thunderbolt that had plenty of power but lacked direction. The Raiders hit back though from a right side move it was the ginger bread man aka Jai Waddick delivering a cross for Fabrice Wamara slide past Tarrant and advance the score to 2-0. The rest of the half marked by tackles of dubious intent testing Mr Bennett’s patience and he did well to only issue two yellow cards both to Coffs Tigers. 2-0 the final scoreline and three points for the Raiders, coach Paul Pomroy pleased with the discipline shown by his squad who really always looked in command.
In other matches the men’s reserve grade went to the Raiders 1-0 Joseph Andrew Pettit the lone scorer, the women’s 1st grade a 2-0 away win over Dorrigo.
